Shots ring out in a quiet Kilgore neighborhood early Monday morning.
Reports say two Kilgore Police Officers were attacked by a man with a knife in his neighbors driveway.
It started when officers responded to a possible kidnapping call in the 1200 block of East North Street in Kilgore.
Officials tell KETK the man, who was known to have mental illness, attacked the officers.
"we do have a protocol but we weren't able to utilize it unfortunately officers did not have much time to react," said Captain Roman Roberson.
During the attack the man was shot and killed by one of the officers.
Officer DeeAnn Brown and SGT. David Tucker both suffered stabbed wounds and were hospitalized.
Emma Jean Freeman Benson tells KETK it was her grand nephew 19-year-old Jamel Joseph Freeman that was shot and killed in a neighbors driveway.
"He was a good kid. He had a mental problem but he was a good kid. He didn't bother nobody, he didn't mess with nobody even through his sickness," says Benson.
It is unknown how Freeman ended up in the neighbors driveway or why he allegedly attacked the officers but Benson believes it wasn't her nephews fault.
"They had to provoke him to do what he did because he wouldn't have done anything like that," Benson tells KETK.
As the investigation continues to the events that transpired monday morning one family is left looking for answers.
"He was just a kid. He was just a 19-year-old kid and they could have done better than what they did," Benson added. "Their job is to protect and to serve our children not to harm them, not to harm them."
