UPDATE: The drowning victim has been identified as Marcos Daniel Hernandez, 27, of Tyler, according to the Wood County Game Warden.

A 27 year old Hispanic man drowned Monday night in Lake Hawkins, according to Wood County Game Warden Derek Spitzer.

The man was swimming about 80 yards from shore at about 6:40 pm when he began struggling and went under the water. Although friends tried to rescue him, the man was under water for 20 to 30 minutes before witnesses were able to locate and retrieve his body. They attempted CPR, but it was unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene after EMS arrived.

The victim's name has not been released pending notification of family.

Spitzer said alcohol did not play a role in the man's death. The incident is the first reported drowning of the year.
