TYLER -- Some parents who have children born in the summer are choosing to hold them back a year, the reason is to make sure they are mature enough when they start kindergarten. Some parents say kids should start as soon as possible but what's best for the student?

It's called "redshirting",and many parents are doing it. According to the Rand Corporation, kids who were delayed by a year scored 6 points higher on standardized math and reading test.

But the con -- is the cost. Parents who wait to start their children later means, they may have to pay for an additional year of childcare or if they stay home with their kids it could mean a year less in workforce for the parents. Some parents say, the extra time at home helps and others believe the kids need to be in school.

According to the Journal of Economic Perspectives, in the last 40 years the number of six year old kindergartners has jumped twelve percent.
