CHEROKEE COUNTY — KETK aired a story last week about donkeys being abandoned amid rising hay costs.
NBC News picked up the story, and was seen online by one man all the way in Mexico.
He wrote in to KETK saying he thinks the solution lies across the border.
"I know a lot of people down here who could use that transportation especially in the sierras," said James Welberry, a boat captain in Mazatlan, Mexico. "Because they don't have vehicles, they don't have anything else.
Welberry, who is from the U.S., says ... what's one person's trash could be another man's treasure.
"A lot of the people down here can't even afford to own a donkey," he said. "Many can barely afford to keep food on the table. A free donkey would be beneficial to be able to move a crop down to market, a lot of things ..."
Welberry says he has already sent emails to people he knows in politics asking for help.
"There's got to be some cost in moving a donkey from Texas to Mexico, vet fees, but you have to figure out how to make it happen," Welberry said.
Deputy Joe Self of Cherokee County is skeptical.
"I know a guy that approached me that was trying to work a deal with a guy for 150 donkeys, which were going to go to Mexico to the slaughter plants," Self said. "If that's what they are really gonna do with them, I don't see any problem with it. But where you gonna put all these donkeys until they get to Mexico?"
Welberry says he is going to continue to pursue his idea, though he doesn't know how far he'll get.
"I think it's a worthwhile cause," Welberry said. "You had a gentleman on the show that said donkeys were worthless. They might be worthless in Texas, but they are not worthless somewhere else."

To the man who wants to ship the donkeys to Mexico to people who can't afford to buy them. If they can't afford to buy a donkey, then they can't afford to feed and care for them, either. Don't send the donkeys to a life of certain drudgery and starvation just to get them out of Texas. Think it through, man.
If the price of Gas keeps going up , we might need those donkeys right here to get to the store !
NO donkeys are NOT worthless. How dare someone make such an ignorant comment. And if they can figure out how to get human beings across the border without a hitch, seems like they should be able to get a load of LEGAL donkeys across the other way.
