Tyler, Tx (KETK) — While our East Texas weather has calmed down for now, the official tornado count from the storms this week keeps rising. A National Weather Service storm survey team has just confirmed than an EF1 Tornado (Winds of 86-110 mph) did touch down in Sabine county, near Hemphill in the Strickland Crossing area. The tornado damaged homes and killed 1 person.
Storm surveys from Monday's storms have finally been completed and the official tornado count for East Texas has risen to 13, which brings the total for the week to 14. The vast majority of these were small, weak (EF0), short-lived tornadoes with top winds of only 70-75 mph that only damaged trees.
Two tornadoes on Monday were rated as an EF-1s with winds of 90 mph. One struck in extreme SE Rusk county near the community of Caledonia and damaged 1 mobile home, and another outside of Mount Enterprise. Fortunately Monday's storms caused no injuries.
That was not the case with Thursday's storms in Sabine county that did cause a fatality. That tornado was rated an EF-1 with wind speeds of over 100mph.
Damage that occurred outside of Wells in Cherokee County on Thursday was determined to just be strong winds and not an actual tornado.
