Upshur County — GILMER — A judge on Wednesday placed 29 small-breed dogs in state custody after their owner testified she loves the animals and does not operate a puppy mill.
Upshur County sheriff’s deputies seized the dogs Friday after a burglary investigation led them to a home on Texas 155 south of Gilmer. Owner Thelma Poche has 10 days to appeal Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Laura Norred’s decision that seven Chihuahuas, 14 Yorkshire terriers and eight Yorkshire puppies should remain in state care.
