The Upshur County Sheriff's Office on Friday confirmed that 46-year-old Gordon Maxwell of Ore City has been identified as the victim of a suspected murder earlier in the week.

Sheriff's Office Lt. Freddie Fitzgerald said Maxwell was the husband of Sharon Stanley Maxwell, 43, who was arrested Tuesday night and charged with murder. Maxwell remains in the Upshur County Jail, held on $750,000 bonds.

The sheriff's department is still waiting to receive a preliminary cause of death from an autopsy report being conducted by Southwest Forensic Center in Dallas.

Maxwell's body was found Tuesday after authorities responded to a vehicle fire at a home on Texas 155 North, just north of the Ore City city limits. Investigators found a body in the vehicle after the fire was extinguished. Officials described the body as being "suspicious in nature." Justice of the Peace Lyle Potter pronounced Maxwell

"Through the investigation, it was found that the person located in the vehicle may not have died as a result of the fire, but by other means," Sheriff Anthony Betterton said earlier this week. "The investigation led to investigators obtaining an arrest warrant for murder for Sharon Stanley Maxwell."
