Folks who live in Upshur County are not known for being shy when it comes to politics.
Today was no exception as a public hearing was held on a proposed increase in property taxes.
But, then again, they have a half million dollar hole to fill in their budget.
The Commissioner’s Court meeting in Gilmer was packed today.
People began arriving early and signing up to speak.
Not necessarily about the Court’s agenda, but the public hearing after the session to discuss a proposed 4-cent property tax hike.
Upshur County is short of funds. $525,000 short this year alone.
And the commissioners are debating the tax.

And the biggest issue with taxpayers was what they see as an extravagant retirement plan for county employees.
County Judge Dean Fowler was on the defensive through the whole meeting, but some who were there, understood the dilemma every government faces.
The final vote on the tax hike will be September 28th.
