Tyler, TX — There is one particular type of cancer which a leading cause of death.
The UT Health Northeast held a lung cancer conference Friday to discuss the risk, treatment and prevention of lung cancer.
Doctors at the cancer center say, lung cancer rates are higher than ever. This is why they feel it's important to discuss this particular cancer and to focus on research.
"In this surrounding area, lung cancer kills 8 times as many people as prostate cancer and it kills 4 times as many people as breast cancer..and those cancers are important as well of course but lung cancer is such a deadly killer," says Dr. Edward Sauter, Director of Cancer Center at UT Health Northeast.
"Radon gas, or there's other exposures usually do to an occupation such as asbestos, or silica or other types of wood smoke than can contribute to lung cancer," says Dr. Julie Philley, Pulmonologist.
Dr. Sauter says, people really need to understand how deadly smoking can be.
They are working on two therapies to find certain mutations to target lung cancer.
