Tyler , TX (KETK) — UT Tyler will offer a new program in the fall.
It's called Patriots Applying Technology for Success and Savings.
The UT Tyler president said quote," this is the most important initiative the school will undertake this decade. "
Starting in the fall of 2013, UT Tyler will start using hyflex courses.
It's a new set of courses involving 50% online classes and 50% face-to-face in the classroom.
"The HY is for hybrid and the flex is for flexibility so we want students to really enjoy these and be engaged," said Asst. Vice President for Teaching Innovation Dr. Scott Marzilli.
It's for student who can't always be on campus.
"We have a new program that will allow for the best of both worlds," said Marzilli.
The idea is to offer classes in the most popular courses.
Then watch how students and the faculty react to these type of classes over a five year period.
UT Tyler President Dr. Rodney Mabry says they will see if the program works.
"The hybrid course means they will meet in class, they will still have the professor and they will still have their co-patriots around them to help discuss issues but also to work through issues," said Mabry.
Steven Mintz, from the UT System says this is a great idea.
"All of our campuses are in the process of reinventing higher education for the 21st century to meet the needs of a new generation of students whose really embraced the online world," said Mintz.
