UT Tyler Women reach milestone; Patriots baseball team full of East Texans
Tyler — The UT Tyler Women are nationally ranked for the first time.
The Patriots are 25th in the country.
They've lost just three times this season.
They did not lose Thursday night.
UT Tyler beat Concordia University at the Herrington Patriot Center, 71-61.
She'Cara Humphrey led the Patriots with 23 points.
The Winnin' Women have won six straight and nine of their last ten.
The Patriots stay in first place in the American Southwest Conference.
The UT Tyler baseball team will have its home opener Friday night at 6:00.
The Patriots have plenty of players from East Texas.
They have athletes from Tyler Lee, Whitehouse, Longview, White Oak, Bullard, Brook Hill, Mineola, Winona, Hughes Springs, Harleton, Athens, Cralisle and the East Texas Christian Academy.
Gunner Baker won a state championship last year with Carlisle High School in Price.
He said everyone works well together.
Travis Yanker is a pitcher from Tyler Lee.
"It's a testament to the local talent here in East Texas," Yanker said. "There's a lot of talent here in East Texas."
Chris Bertrand is the UT Tyler baseball coach.
"High school baseball and select baseball in East Texas is as good as it gets anywhere," Bertrand said. "It means so many things to have quality baseball players from around here on our ball club."
