Late Monday night, around 40 mailboxes were destroyed on County Road 3108 by Lake Jacksonville.

Cherokee County Precinct 3 Constable Eddie Lee tells KETK, he believes the vandals used their pickup truck.

"Some of the mailboxes like the wooden mailboxes, they're just driving right over...if they're metal mailboxes, it looks like they're backing up to them and just bending them over," Lee said.

The constable says many of the folks that live along the road are elderly...and they get medicine delivered to their mailbox.

"If somebody runs over that box and happens to squish that medicine...you know...it's hard for them to have to go back and get prescriptions and things like that," Lee said.

George Douglas says it's happened to him 4 times in the last year.

"The last time this happened, I set the mailbox in concrete...so that you just couldn't pull it out of the ground...well this time they put a rope over the crossmember and broke it off," Douglas said.

Douglas says he and some of his neighbors have set up a $500 reward through the Constable's office.

"Some of us just decided we were going to press the issue and try to find the culprit," Douglas said.

Farther down the road, L. Ray Dafft tells KETK, he and his wife couldn't afford to pay someone to replace their mailbox so they did the work themselves.

We asked him if they were hurting today.

"Well we have been...I've took some medication," Dafft said.

Even though they have a sturdier, metal post now, they're hoping it won't happen again.

"If they want to knock it over bad enough and they're equipped for it...they'll get it too," Dafft said.

The Constable tells KETK the price tag on the damage is around $1,800 to $2,000 since mailboxes are $60 to $70 a pop.

He says the vandals also took out some nearby street signs -- of course that's taxpayer dollars.

The constable tells KETK there's a $500 reward if you have a tip that leads to arrest.

And they're already getting leads.  If you can help, he says to call him at 903-586-6211 or his cell, 903-721-1790.
