Longview ISD’s longest serving trustee said Monday he plans to step down after more than 40 years of service; meanwhile, a longtime Parent Teacher Organization member and recent participant of the Longview High School Campus Improvement Team has declared her interest for the seat if it becomes vacant.

John Harrison, 79, was first elected to the board in 1971, taking office just as Longview ISD was being integrated.

He said Monday his health is a concern, and, while he is not planning to seek re-election, his final decision will be made after talking to his doctor Thursday. Ginia Northcutt, whose two children graduated from the district and who has worked since the mid-2000s with the high school and Foster Middle School, declared her intention Monday of running for the seat, as long as it did not mean opposing Harrison.
