Volunteers take course to prep for feline population control program
Longview — A group of about 10 volunteers took a hands-on course Tuesday to prepare for a program aimed at reducing the number of cats brought through the doors at the Longview animal shelter.
The program that traps, spays or neuters and then returns feral cats will be run by a volunteer committee working with the Humane Society of Northeast Texas’ animal shelter. It’s scheduled to begin the weekend of Oct. 26.
Volunteers with the program spent about an hour Tuesday night discussing the first catch.
“This is a program that is a win-win for everybody — the cats, the community, the city, the shelter,” said volunteer Mary Joe Murphy, who along with her husband has attended several months of meetings leading to the start of the trap and release program.
