The Gladewater Police Department has a new program for the community. You do not need to go into the law enforcement field to see what it's like as a police officer. Now you can join a citizen policy academy. For the first time ever, you can walk in the shoes of a Gladewater police officer.

"It allows the police department to interact directly with the community," said Gladewater Chief of Police, Robert Vine.

He said you may be surprised by what a day in the life of officers is really like.

"What we do daily is not what you see on Cops and CSI.  We actually can't solve a serious crime in thirty minutes or less," said Vine.

The officers will have the chance to be teachers, covering a wide range of topics.

"Penal code, criminal investigations, narcotics, juvenile law and basically the entire criminal justice program," said Vine.

Gladewater Traffic Officer, Bryan McCallum, will teach about traffic laws.

"Just seeing how we run day to day...the inside of how we work," said McCallum.

Participants will get hands on experience.

"They'll also perform mock traffic stops and conduct a mock crime scene," said Vine.

The students will be the investigators.

"Collecting evidence, taking pictures, taking all the information they have and coming to a conclusion," said Vine.

Citizens will even have the chance to trade places with the officers.

"They will be in the role of the officer, and the officer will be in the role of the citizen. They will see what we see at a traffic stop and see why we react in the manner that we react," said Vine.

"There's a lot of things behind this job that some people just don't understand...It takes being in the shoes of an actual officer to see how it goes," said McCallum.

The academy kicks off September 23rd. The seven-week-program will meet Tuesday nights from six to nine.

If you are interested in participating, you can pick up an application from the Gladewater Police Department.

Applications are due by September 1st.
