A wanted East Texas man turned himself into authorities Monday afternoon at the Upshur County Jail.

Law enforcement officials began a manhunt for Justin Echols, 30, of Diana, after he allegedly crashed a truck into a tree Wednesday evening, killing Michele Allen, 27, of Harleton, Texas. The incident happened on County Road 217 just north of Overton.

Echols is accused of driving the Ford F-350 truck that lost control while turning a corner and hit a tree. Allen was thrown from the truck and pinned underneath it. She later died from her injuries.

Authorities believe Echols hopped on an ATV, traveled in an unknown direction on CR 217 and crashed again. He then ran from the scene.

Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Justin Lee Echols Thursday afternoon, charging him with accident involving personal injury or death, a 3rd degree felony.

Judge Kerry Russell of the 7th Judicial District Court signed the warrants at 4 p.m.

Echols turned himself into authorities Monday at the Upshur County Jail at around 3 p.m. His bond is set at $250,000.

The suspect will be transferred to Smith County Jail at an unknown time.
