Weather aftermath in East Texas, tow yards on overload
TYLER, TEXAS (KETK) — The icy roads were a nightmare Tuesday night and many also lost their power last night, too. The road conditions were pretty dangerous yesterday.
Auto shops and towing companies were on overload. Absolute Towing and Recovery's tow yard in Tyler has been filling up. "Our trucks were extremely busy," said Jason Burroughs, Absolute Towing & Recovery.
The wintry weather, sleet, rain, slick roads, poor visibility left many East Texans on side of the road.
"A lot of people start hydroplaning of the interstate, we work numerous wrecks with Highway Patrol," said Burroughs.
We're told once the cars are processed, then they're off to the body shops. Auto repair specialists at Davis-Green Paint and Body in Tyler tell us, the cars are coming in for repairs. "People are sliding into curbs, suspension damage, people not judging their distance correctly and low rear end jobs," said Kendall Houge, Auto Repair Specialist.
Auto experts say, take caution, check your car to make sure it's winter ready so you won't run into big problems. We've seen a lot of dead batteries, most folks don't think about their batteries until the car won't start, tires are very important, to keeping you safe on the road you want to make sure you have good air pressure in the tires and also good tread wear," said David Brown, Robertson Automotive in Tyler.
And another important thing you must check. "You want to make sure you check your wiper blades an make sure they're not frozen to your windshield, before you take off," said Brown.
This round of wintry weather even left thousands out of power. ONCOR Electric officials tell us, areas of Lufkin and Nacogdoches, and the Tyler area were affected.
Dallas and Waco crews assisted with restoration. We're told drive safe and always be prepared for a wintry weather.
