After a long wait, the city of Ore City has a newly appointed council member. The decision was made Tuesday night with a coin flip.

City Secretary Gail Weir told KETK Steve Heim won the seat by calling "heads." The new councilman earned the right to call the toss after he first won a highest card draw from a deck of playing cards.

Steve Heim was originally thought to have defeated Jeannett Orms 48-44, but then officials discovered one of the boxes from an electronic voting machine had not been counted. The votes were recounted, and it was determined on May 13 the two had tied at 55.

Rather than hold another election, both candidates agreed to a coin flip, which is allowed under state law.

The coin flip took place at 7 p.m. during a special session at city hall. Heim will now serve an unexpired term on the Ore City Council.
