After easing himself back into the spotlight in recent weeks, John Mayer is ready to hit the road.

The 35-year-old singer/songwriter revealed on Thursday that he's going to play more than 40 cities this summer, embarking on his first major concert tour in three years. According to Billboard, nearly all of the tour dates will be opened by "Idol" winner Phillip Phillips.

The trek is in support of his 2012 album, "Born & Raised," and it'll take him to South America as well. Beginning in Milwaukee on July 6, Mayer will head across the States and also down to Buenos Aires, Argentina (September 17) and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (September 21). The "Born & Raised 2013" tour will conclude in Los Angeles on October 5.

Prior to launching the tour, Mayer will also play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in L.A. on April 18, as well as at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on April 26.

The singer told Billboard that being able to sing live again, after having vocal surgery twice and falling into a forced season of silence as he recovered, is like getting a new lease on life.

"The greatest gift I have in my life is the opportunity to play again, which is also the opportunity to dream again," Mayer said. "My dreams were in escrow, but when I found out this thing in my throat had receded, the most exciting thing for me was having a second chance at a new life. My dreams have come true twice. That's really cool."
