On October 16, Eatocracy will be joining the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to end hunger on World Food Day.

There are an estimated 900 million hungry people in the world today, and according to the USDA, 50 million people, or 16.6 percent of Americans, live in households at risk of hunger.

The theme of this year's World Food Day is "Agricultural cooperatives: key to feeding the world."

Cooperatives play an important role in improving food security, particularly in rural areas where hunger is most prevalent.

According to the FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP): "Empowered by being a part of a larger group, smallholder farmers can negotiate better terms in contract farming and lower prices for agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizer and equipment. In addition, cooperatives offer prospects that smallholder farmers would not be able to achieve individually such as helping them to secure land rights and better market opportunities."

Every little bit helps, whether you host a World Food Day meal, plant something in your garden or simply give a piece of fruit to a person in need. How will you help end hunger today?
