Friday was a welcome home celebration for East Texas soldier, Kayla Johnson. The Elkhart High School senior came home from boot camp. Johnson is part of the Split Ops Program. She will continue military training next summer after she graduates. Johnson said she always wanted to be in the military. She was very thankful for all the support and the welcome home. A crowd gathered at Tyler's Jalapeno Tree to celebrate her service.

"It feels good. I've gotten several people come up to me and tell me that they're thankful for my service. It feels good just knowing that I'm doing something for a bigger reason," said Johnson.

Johnson will be a reserve while she is in college. After school, she said she wants to go active. Johnson said she enjoyed her time at boot camp.

"I already miss everyone. I miss my drill sergeants. I miss waking up at five o'clock in the morning as crazy as it sounds, but it feels good to be home. I missed everybody. I'm ready to go to my unit and get started in furthering my career," said Johnson.
