UPDATE: Dr. Khosrowshahi announces he's retiring following his recent arrest.

A Tyler Junior College professor was released from jail late last month after he allegedly committed several crimes.

Manouchehr Rostamy Khosrowshahi, a.k.a. 'Dr. K.,' is charged with theft, fraud and tampering with evidence. He is accused of stealing items from the Walmart on Troup Highway, according to the Tyler Police Department.

Khosrowshahi was booked into the Smith County Jail on December 26 and released the next morning on $15,000 bail.

According to the TJC website, Khosrowshahi is a government professor. He is also the winner of several prestigious awards including 'Texas Professor of the Year' (2008), 'The Piper Professor' (2010), and most recently 'The Best Advisor of Year' (2012).

Khosrowshahi received his B.A. in Political Science from the National University of Iran in 1976, his M.A. in Political Science from Tehran University, Iran, in 1978, his Ph.D. in Political Science from University of North Texas in 1983 and has three post-doctoral fellowships from UT-Austin, Rice and the United States Institute of Peace.

TJC Spokesman Fred Peters tells KETK Khosrowshahi announced his retirement effective immediately Thursday morning. In a letter to the administration,  the professor cited physical and mental health as causes for his decision.

Khosrowshahi worked for TJC since 1987.

Peters says anyone who was in his class should stay enrolled, and there will more than likely be a replacement professor put in his place. Students will be notified of any other changes.

If in fact, he DID have brain surgery, it can be a significant change to the personality and certainly elicits a kinder reaction toward Dr. K from me. I'm sad for him, he has been such a huge positive presence on the campus. I wish for him a way to emerge from this ordeal with a greater sense of his old self.

It should be noted from news reports (though they usually contain misinformation) that this has been going on since the 1980s, first in Austin TX and then in Denton TX. This is not his first rodeo.
It is really surprising that people in power or hi-visibility compromise their positions this way.
We should realize that people in the public eye are not perfect and usually have major character flaws that allowed them to achieve their positions of power. Wynona Ryder anyone? Charisma, but flawed.

I took Dr. K's Federal Government class last semester, and was enrolled for his Texas Government class this coming semester (Spring 2013).
It's sad that this has happened; I really liked him. He was a nice man.

It should be noted that Professor Khosrowshahi underwent major brain surgery in recent years and has not been himself since. I would appreciate if the News Media would further investigate the history of a man, before they slander his name in the Press. There may be more to the story than just what you see on the surface.....

This is beyond a shock...Dr. K is a dynamic, intelligent, engaging and motivating professor who did something that is completely out of character. Why would someone like this resort to theft of any kind? What would drive someone to do something so useless, compromise all he has worked so long and hard for, and jeopardize his future this way? This doesn't make sense, and Dr. K really owes those he's taught for so many years a reason for this character failure. Such a sad day.

I would think TJC would pay better than that.
