West Rusk ISD Superintendent Resigns

King calls it quits at emergency Board meeting...

The West Rusk Consolidated Independent School District has had it’s share of staff problems over the last few years.

In 2006, 3 employees were suspended for sexually explicit e-mails.

The next year, Superintendent Steve Jones and two coaches resigned in the wake of a scandal involving misappropriation of school funds and property.

Now, Superintendent Mike King has handed in his resignation. It happened at an emergency board meeting that was held this afternoon at 3:30.

The attorney for the district John Hardy, offices in Tyler. We called 5 times this week trying to get a statement. None of those calls were returned. But, teachers have been contacting KETK about the situation involving King for several weeks.

The emails we’ve been getting involve inappropriate relationships and possible business improprieties.

KETK has learned that another employee, Curriculum Director Michelle Cline, had been told to appear at the meeting, but did not.

We can confirm that King and Cline, were in Austin together in April while he testified for an education bill. But the bill in question had nothing to do with issues involving her department.

Sources tell KETK that the board agreed to pay King's salary to the end of the year. But the resignation takes effect immediately.

I've known Mr. King a long time and he is a good man with a wonderful family. The biggest mistake that Mike made at WR was hireing an administrator with a history of destroying school districts throughout East Texas. Mike is a great man and has always believed in helping others and i wish he and his family the best in their future endeavors. NBC 56 needs to investigate the administrator, and his two previous positions. In both cases, the districts were put through turmoil with numerous allegations. My stand is to want the truth about the real injustice to be out so another family isnt put through this.

This sort of behavior is happening all over East Texas, Check out Henderson (the city) Mr. Gray. It is all over town about the same so-called rumor of this guy and the same thing happening in Henderson with a co-worker (her boss) at hotels over the weekend on city time. Please check into this.

Debbie,
As the old saying goes, “you hit the nail right on the head “ about the job performance of Mr. King.” I have been a teacher at West Rusk CCISD for 20 years, and in my opinion, Mike King is the best superintendent we have had in those years. The concern and care he has shown for the students, faculty and staff, school district and the community of New London should be commended. Mr. King always has praise for the students and faculty and staff in all their endeavors and through hard work has accomplished many good things for WRCCISD.
Yes, Mr. King and his family will suffer because of someones’ vindictiveness, but we must also think about the students at WRCCISD, and once again, they will have to suffer because someone just couldn’t wait to get at Mr. King through the media. Yet in truth, these vindictive actions also “got” the students of West Rusk. The truth of the matter is that if the teachers and students at West Rusk CCISD were asked their opinions on Mr. Mike King the opinions would probably be in his favor. The media reported that teachers had been calling all week asking about this matter, when in fact, most teachers didn’t even know this was going on until Friday. Maybe it would have been more appropriate and precise for the media to have stated “some people with ties to the school.”
In the classroom, we have always tried to stress good character to our students. West Rusk CCISD has great students, who I can personally say, have all tried their best when the best is asked of them. How does this look to them? Vicious gossip and rumors by adults used to attack a man who has time after time shown our students that if you work hard at school you will succeed in the classroom, on the athletic courts and fields and in the fine arts such as music and drama.
Shame on anyone who has used their own agenda and attacked WRCCISD by attacking Mr. King. It’s one thing to pick on an adult, but when school kids are the “collateral damage” then ----SHAME ON YOU!

My son and I have been a part of WRCCISD for only a short time and in that short time their has been a lot of changes. I have to agree with you thought when it comes to Mr. King. In the short time I was Band Booster President I had communications with Mr. King and his knowledge and concern for our children was sincere. It is tragic that our school is once again in the media. The changes that have been made since Mr. King came to us have been good in my opinion. Our biggest headline should be that we are going on to the second round of playoffs!

Mr. Gray, you are wrong the rumors were not confirmed
Mr. King resigned for family and personal reasons and it was by no means an admission of guilt as you insinuated in your report.
He has done many good things for our school district which you failed to mention and has been instrumental in bringing our school back to a level in academics and sports that we have not seen for many years, if you want to tell a story tell everyone about our improved TAKS scores, our band making a 1 at UIL marching contest, or our football team in the second round of state playoff games It amazes me that the media seems to concentrate on the bad and they are never around for the good things
I will never understand why people who want to call themselves members of our community would sensationalize a story like this and tear down everything that is good about the school and area we live in by running their mouths and gossiping.
We do not want our community to be recognized for ruining lives, breaking hearts and gossiping, do we?
Let’s be positive, move forward and do what is best for the children in our school
Mr. King has a wonderful family that is completely innocent and should not have to hear this BS
If there are teachers in our school district that are unhappy, the board would be a good place to start with your concerns instead of the TV news

Kenneth first of all lets not with hold our last name... I would like to say to you .. That school board at West Rusk is a JOKE. If you are not in "their" little click then you are a nobody.. I was born and raised in the community. When the board can tell me my son was and is a liar about sexual assault it stinks only to just cover up what really did happen and save face for one of your coaches and maybe a school board members child.. how can anything really be accomplished at that school with the school board the way it is??? I am glad that man is gone and there are several more that need to follow. It is a shame how those people can live with themselves. You know what comes around goes around.. the rest of them I hope will have their day and believe me they will when they meet their maker.

Mrs. Floyd, sorry for the omission my last name is Copeland, I am also sorry for the way you feel about the school board at West Rusk.
The school board makes decisions based on the information we have before us and there is no bias when these decisions are made.
I don’t know anything about the “click” so I can not respond to that.
I am very proud to say that I also was born and raised in this school district and graduated from West Rusk.
You can rest assured there is only one true judgment and he will get it right.

I attend West Rusk and I am absolutely shocked at all of this! I had no idea this was even going on until the news last night.

Mr Copeland do you know anything about cattle rustling? Did I read something that you were not involved in clicks? This IS EAST TEXAS JUSTICE right? Yes you do have your clicks. There are people that know your past and present. To thine ownself be true, dont cast stones.

Anonymous,
If you are accusing me of cattle rustling you need to get some kind of medication for your memory or start talking to people who tell the truth.
The only EAST TEXAS JUSTICE I would like to see is for the young people at West Rusk
They definitely deserve it

Kenneth, i was moved by your comments about MR.King ! im just wondering what else he and the board are in to? All i can say is what comes around goes around, and the eyes are upon all of you. This had to have been the best news i have heard in weeks, now if we can clean the board up everything will be wonderful !

Lady you are fat liar, 2 law enforcement agengies and child protective services investigated your sons case and found there was no merit it was a lie. This was your way to get at some kids that your son has problems with. Your story is that of a person that just wants to stir trouble, and this recent event falls right into your busy body hands.

Mr. Lee, First of all my son had no problems with these kids to begin with, second my son is not a known liar, and doesnt have a reason to lie at all. He is a very brilliant young man that told told the truth... I never wanted to stir trouble .. had no reason whatsoever to do so... and yes you are right when sex scandals happen at school it is saddening to me... and should be to you and everyone else .. but since I am not the father of the kid that is on the school board that did this to my son..yeah you can say my hands were tied behind my back.. and as far as the agencies that investigated... LOL... New London PD.. a JOKE..they couldnt find a piece of paper to write on....and child protective Service NEVER contacted me or my son...This county, this city, this school is proven to be disgusting even in the most recent event at West Rusk.

If you are familiar with a number of schools in E. Texas, you will be aware that most of them hide behind a facade of decency. I have known several principals that have lied to cover innapropriate and sexual behavior among faculty and staff. This is much more common than most people would think. SHAME ON THEM!

Mike King has done nothing but good for West Rusk Schools in the time he has been Superintendent. He has made campus improvements & sports has done better than they have in years. It's not uncommon for several school administrators to be in Austin at the same time. Is there any proof there was anything inappropriate going on? West Rusk has lost a fine Administrator due to vicious rumors. I find it very sad that the news media is willing to destroy the careers of 2 people merely on speculation not to mention the families. They have children who are going to suffer because of all the ugly publicity. Whatever happened to a person being considered innocent BEFORE being PROVEN guilty. My heart goes out to Mike King, Michelle Cline & their families. If there is no truth to this, I hope they find out who spread these rumors & sue them for defamation of character. Who knows, maybe someone else within the school district just wanted Mike King's job & this was a way of getting it. They couldn't find fault with his work so they decided to play havoc with his personal life. There is no winner in this scandal. The reputation of the school as well as everyone involved loses.

I do not think this man would resign if he were innocent! I know I would not. Resigning pretty much says "I am guilty".

Sir Concerned citizen, I believe if you had the ability to put yourself in his shoes you may think differently, imagine your kids having to set in class and hear the things that kids will say regardless of his guilt or innocence. He got them out of the situation with as little harm to them as he could, it is a bad situation for all.

Oh it is terrible when you have to uproot your children for other peoples mistakes.. but it is even worse when you have to uproot your entire family, home and school because of your mistakes and misconduct shame on that man. Oh my gosh... I can imagine what his kids would go through... that is the most horrible thing isnt it... My heart goes out to his kiddos! How embarrassing.

Ms. Floyd,

I understand why you might be upset with the way your problem was handled as would any parent. I have known Mr. King for a very long time. I went to school with him and know his family well. I cannot say what might have happened with his situation but I know what kind of person Mike is. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He has always been a first class person in my book. Perhaps your anger at one situation should not be a driving force for revenge. I hope you the best but I also hope Mr. King the best. If you were not present at either time that the things were said to happen then you truly don't know what the real story is. Usually there are 3 stories 1. your side 2. the other side 3. the truth. So please don't attack someone or wish bad fortune on them because like you said what comes around goes around

There is alot of sexual behavior at West Rusk CCISD... Mike King and the WR school board did nothing when my son was sexually assaulted by other students in the locker room, just so happens that one of the boys that did this to my son, his father sits on the school board. The school board needs to be disolved. The JR High Principals husband and step father are on the board.. WR attorney John Hardy , Mike King and the board basically told me my son was a liar. I had to take my kids out of that school, just so they could have peace. Here in New London its the Good Ole Boys system... That man needs to be gone.
