GREGG COUNTY - Investigators on scene of the Gregg County plane crash say that plane was an experimental plane, most likely built in the late sixties or early seventies.

Countless experimental planes fly over East Texas.

One local plane builder says people choose to build their own plane because you can add certain features that the FAA may not allow on certified planes, or planes built in factories under f-a-a regulations.

He says in order to fly your home-built plane, you need to keep a builder's log, then ask the FAA to take a look at it once it's complete and after your plane is ok to go, it needs to be inspected once a year

In order to carry passengers on a home-built plane, the pilot must fly the plane for forty hours, however passengers can never be carried for profit on experimental planes.
