Tyler TX — Last night's numbers show: Tyler and JP Pct. 2 in Smith County will 'go wet.' Now, many people are asking. what's next?

The Tyler City Planner, Heather Nick, says, "Until the votes are canvassed which happens on Monday November 19th at 9am no one can submit a permit." Although that is coming up, many people don't realize how extensive the process is. Nick says businesses must go through a seven step process in order to get an alcohol permit.

The first step is to download the permit form, from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commissions website. Nick says, "The city can then verify the location, we go out to the site and make sure it meets all the distance requirements." Once the city clerk signs the permit it then goes to the county and then the state comptroller for review. "Then take it to TABC and they said they have their on average 42 day process," says Nick. Finally, it is signed by the county judge and taken back to TABC, who will issue the permit.

Supervisor, Sgt. Stokke, from TABC tells KETK, "I think they have around 140 permits right now whether it be restaurants or private clubs. We're estimating with Pct. 2 and Tyler both going wet, that they could get up to 200 additional permits."

So, a big question is, where can people buy beer and wine?

The manager of the Exxon on Broadway, Peter Holly, says, "I really don't want it because i don't like to sell beer but if I don't sell the beer ill lose a lot of business so I'm going to sell it."

Brookshire's in Tyler sent us a statement saying they will be applying for alcohol permits and Fresh by Brookshire's said they will as well.

So, just in case you're wondering, when you can start picking up beer or a bottle of wine in Tyler or JP-2, we're told that it will probably be at least 60 days away.
