White Oak city projects create controversy

A water plant upgrade, modest home construction and a baseball complex that teams up the city and school district but prompted two city council resignations are all at play in Roughneck country.

“It’s such a tight-knit, little community,” White Oak City Coordinator Charlie Smith said. “And I found out long ago the school is a drawing card for the community.”

An informal street survey several weeks ago found no school taxpayers troubled by a likely 34-cent tax increase if the White Oak ISD board follows through on a proposed bond to build a new high school.
