With sequester, inmate transport costs fall to county

The federal budget sequester hit home Monday as Gregg County commissioners agreed to assume the costs of moving federal inmates within the Eastern District of Texas. Sheriff Maxey Cerliano estimated that cost at about $48,000.

“Is that part of the federal government cutting back?” County Judge Bill Stoudt asked the sheriff.


“It absolutely is, judge,” Cerliano replied. “They are requesting, based on their budget reductions, that we no longer charge or that we waive the fee for local transport.”

The Gregg County Jail routinely holds inmates charged with federal offenses — the sheriff said he had 122 of them in jail Monday.
