SMITH COUNTY - For the many people with empty stomachs traveling to fill them up with friends and family, the traffic jam on I-20 was not appetizing.

Traffic going West on I-20 was blocked off for hours on Thanksgiving Day because of several wrecks around the I-20 and Highway 110 intersection.

That mess slowed down traffic for travelers who were going to and from major destinations along the Interstate.

Officials tried to control traffic on I-20 by asking drivers to take different routes. For those traveling from Shreveport to Dallas were asked to exit at Highway 259 and take Highway 80 to Terrell.

And those going from Tyler to Dallas were asked to take Highway 64 to Canton.

But many drivers got that message too late, and were forced to wait.

According to a representative from TX-DOT, those detours were cleared by about 4:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and traffic on I-20 was running smoothly.
