Yamboree ushers in sweet potato season
Gilmer — Today is the start of the 76th East Texas Yamboree, which means one thing: Sweet potatoes are the food to consume this week.
The Yamboree was established in 1935 to pay homage to the yam.
Cities across the state were preparing to hold celebrations, indicative of the community, to commemorate the Texas centennial. And in 1935 Upshur County, yams were aplenty.
Today, yams are not as bountiful in the area; however, Upshur County residents continue to celebrate their significance to the region’s history.
