Tyler, KETK — Fourth of July week kicked off in Tyler with the annual parade at Stepping Stone Preschool.
KETK spoke with JoAnne McMeans from the Prestige Estates Assisted Living Center, who said, "They decorated their trikes, bikes, wagons and baby buggies, dress up in their white and blue play clothes, carried their little hand-made flags, carried their liberty torches high, and felt that lump in their throat as they saw the flag pass by". The children hand-made decorations and paraded their creations around the campus. McMeans said, "I hope they took the most wonderful blessing, great memories, and instilling patriotism".
The school even surprised veterans with a special award and assembly. Sargent Bennett said, "They gave me some candy, which I enjoy candy, and kind of an award for coming and doing this. But they really didn't have to". So the children honored local heroes for their service. Bennett shared, "You know it brings joy to me to know that even though I'm in not in the country, my family and friends are back here in Texas and they're supporting me".
Of course the excitement did not stop there. "Texas Senior America 2008" performed her own dance and baton routine, and the little ones learned a valuable lesson. McMeans said, "It's a wonderful day to share a message with boys and girls about how a single person can make a difference, as well as collectively we stand".
