As the Auto Editor here, let me clear a couple of things up. 40 miles is the distance possible on the Volt's battery alone, but the car essentially carries it's own gas-powered generator with it. That will take it over 300 miles on electricity provided by the unit. Volt has been in development for nearly 10 years.
No one killed the hydrogen fuel cell car, the research continues. My colleagues in the industry tell me it isn't as promising or practical as was hoped.
