If you had lived in Texas over the past fifty years, you would have seen the rapid northern migration of the mesquite tree. As the rural farms declined and agricultural areas have concentrated into large irrigated tracts further west, the overgrowth of mesquite has allowed for an accumulation of fuel in those non-cultivated areas of central Texas. The range fires may be detrimental to wildlife, but it should serve to put in check the mesquite tree migration, at least for the next 100 years.
