This story sounds like a group of untrained engineers on that ship. Why couldn't they just isolate the engine room the fire was in (not real bad at that according to story ) and use other engine room or even disconnect generator in engine room where fire was determined to be and its switchboard then use all the rest of available engines and generators?????
