HAWKINS—Hawkins city officials have issued an evacuation notice for all residents in the city.
Officials confirm that between 20-30,000 tires have been burning since just before midnight on Highway 14 South and Burton Road. They say the smoke from the fires is toxic.
City officials say if you live in Hawkins and don't have anywhere to go, you can go to the Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department at 389 East Blackbourn.
Hawkins, Holly Lake and Red Springs Volunteer Fire Departments are responding to the fire. The cause is unknown at this time.
Officials at City Hall also say they are in the process of setting up a command center at the back of City Hall on 200 North Beaulah. The fire department, Red Cross, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will set up there.
We're also awaiting an official statement later this morning.
All Hawkins ISD activities, including sports, are cancelled for the day.
Classes at Jarvis Christian College have been delayed until noon.
Officials say the bank is also closed.
