Henderson, TX (KETK) — The City of Henderson is growing and they found a formula that works, it's by re-investing in itself.
Henderson is one of many cities on the move, KETK spoke with the City of Henderson council about what they are doing.
They tell KETK, they're coming together to support local businesses and the community.
Council members approve two areas for reinvestment zones.
Reinvestment zones are places where the city of Henderson is pumping in money to improve things.
"It's great for our downtown, it brings new businesses, we have a building in downtown that has been vacant for more than 40 years and hopefully soon it will be up and operating," Kim Johnson, Vice Chair, Owner of 'The Mustard Seed'.
The council finds that tax cuts seem to be the answer to having a better economy.
These are the two properties the city is looking to reinvest in, the old First National Bank building in downtown, and opening a Denny's and Gateway Travel Plaza at the intersection of East Main Street and Highway 79.
"The reinvestment zone part of it was so that maybe we can do some infrastructure that would help them," The City of Henderson, Mayor Pat Brack.
Mayor Brack adds,
"If they're having a hard time financially getting started but their future looks really good and of course all of that is taken into account and they are going to hire so many people and we will give them a tax abatement for so many years."
They ran into a few snags with a drainage ditch but found a way around it.
"Developers are looking at that up to being a half million dollars so we can help with that through tax abatement, it's about a 3 to 3.5 million dollar project, so there's some city taxes that can be abated on improvement," says Mike Barrow, City Manager.
The City of Henderson Mayor, Pat Brack says, the city of henderson is doing everything for a brighter future.
"I'm looking so forward to that corner having something really really nice on it, the attraction the curb appeal it's going to have and they're really in a great spot," says Mayor, Pat Brack.
