Wood County, TX (KETK) — The Wood County Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of "smash and grab" burglaries in the areas of Lake Brenda, Lake Lydia and Clear Lakes areas.
On Monday at approximately 3:00 a.m., alleged thieves broke into two cars in the Lake Brenda subdivision. Guns were taken from both vehicles. One of the car's windows was smashed to gain entry. According to officials, the other vehicle may have been unlocked. A garage door opener left in one of the cars was used to get in the garage. Nothing appeared to be taken from the garage.
Contrary to rumor, there has not been a rash of home invasions or burglaries at Lake Brenda. There has, however, been a recent increase in the number of car thefts in the Quitman area as well.
The thieves drive into an area and look into parked vehicles. If personal items are seen, they smash the windows, grab the item and drive away.
Authorities recommend people not leave firearms, computers, cameras or other items visible in their cars at night. Also, cars should be parked in lighted areas when possible.
The sheriff's office is working on leads gathered from neighborhood cameras. If you have any information regarding the thefts, please contact the Wood County Sheriff's Office.
