Waco, TX (KETK) — A Waco man was arrested after a routine traffic stop revealed he was in possession of marijuana, an unknown explosive device and a grenade.
Waco police stopped Joseph Calvin Gaynor, 53, Thursday around 10:50 p.m., for a traffic violation near the intersection of 18th Street and LaSalle Rd.
During the stop, officers discovered Gaynor had an unknown explosive device, a grenade, marijuana and he was driving with an invalid license.
Officials closed off the area after finding the explosives to prevent injury in the event the device detonated.
Fort Hood authorities were able to safely remove the explosive device from the vehicle and has transported it to Ft. Hood for disposal.
ATF has been notified of the arrest and the device found and will be conducting a follow up interview as well.
The suspect, Joseph Calvin Gaynor has been charged with having a prohibited weapon/explosive weapon, possession of marijuana, and driving while his license was invalid.
He was taken to the McLennan County Jail. At this early stage of the investigation it is unknown what Gaynor’s intentions with the device were.
Waco Fire Department, Emergency Management, Crime Scene Technicians and ETMC assisted on the scene as well.
