Longview, TX (Letourneau University) — LeTourneau University announces that Charles West has recently joined LETU as a psychology professor and director of LETU’s graduate psychology, counseling and marriage and family therapy programs.
West is the past president of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB), the organizing body for state marriage and family therapy licensing boards. Dr. West has served three years as president-elect, president for two years and will complete his two years as past-president at the end of this year.
West holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from MidAmerica Nazarene University, a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Indiana State University, and his doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from Virginia Tech University.
West has worked in community mental health in Leavenworth, Kan., with All Faiths Counseling Center in Atchison, Kan., and completed a doctoral internship at an in-patient adolescent unit in Salem, Va. He also worked as a youth and music minister in Pueblo, Colo. He served as an associate professor and interim chair in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Mississippi before joining the marriage and family therapy program faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he also served three years as chair of the Department of Child and Family Studies.
He is a licensed marriage and family therapist and approved supervisor in the state of Mississippi, and has applied to be licensed in the state of Texas. He has worked as a therapist with individuals, couples and families for over three decades and has trained master’s and doctoral students in marriage and family therapy, psychology and professional counseling. He has also provided supervision for post-graduate therapists seeking their LMFT licenses.
As a professor at LETU, he is the director of three graduate degrees: a Master of Arts in Counseling, a Master of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, delivered online and in classes in Longview.
Besides serving on the board of the AMFTRB, he served nine years on the Mississippi Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists, his last three years as chair of the board. He is also the co-editor of a book published in 2012, Family Therapy Review: Contrasting Contemporary Models, and is first author of an article published January 2013 in the flagship journal of the marriage and family counseling profession, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, an article titled “Marriage and Family Therapy: Examining the impact of licensure on an evolving profession.”
West and his wife Diana have been married 37 years. They and their two Dalmatians are all looking forward to relocating to Longview from Flower Mound, Texas, where the West’s attend the Lantana Community Fellowship Church of the Nazarene.
