Longview, TX (Longview News-Journal) — A National Weather Service spokesman said Friday recently announced furloughs for the organization's employees could threaten public safety during severe weather outbreaks.
National Weather Service employees will be subject to furloughs now through September due to mandatory federal spending cuts, according to a letter sent to the Shreveport office.
The group’s parent organization, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sent the letter earlier this week to the local NWS office, according to union spokesman Aaron Stevens.
“We’re already down four employees in this office,” Stevens said. “Because of a hiring freeze in place due to the federal government’s sequestration, those positions are not being filled.”
