(CNN) — A bomb blast killed five U.S. service members in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, U.S. and NATO officials said.
It was a roadside explosion in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province that killed them, said Javid Faisal, spokesman for the provincial governor.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told CNN that 10 soldiers were killed in the blast, though the group is known for exaggerating the number of casualties.
Earlier this week, three British service members were killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.
