Nacogdoches, Tx (KETK) — Parents can become a part of the Nacogdoches Independent School District's Parents Are Leaders group or PAL.
The program seeks to mobilize parents into a proactive force to help determine the needs of the district, problems facing students today, and assist in nurturing the positives within NISD.
"We would like the P.A.L.s of NISD program to engage parents in a partnership that gives them input into the future of our schools and makes our district even stronger," said Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes.
NISD is looking for at least 20 to 30 parents that are able to participate.
NISD's recently developed communication plan seeks a high level of parent engagement at the district and school level. NISD communications coordinator Rayanne Schmid said the formation of the Parents as Leaders program began at a cellular level.
Facebook comments from some NISD parents reinforced the immediate need for such a team.
"A mother of four NISD students, Sherry Slowikowski, proposed forming a parent group while talking through a recent campus issue with other moms on our Facebook page," said Schmid.
Schmid called the mom and began discussing the opportunity to join forces for a stronger district.
Slowikowski took action and located parents to help serve on P.A.L.s, but NISD says that more are needed.
They would like to have every grade level represented. The group will have monthly meetings and special task forces that will take plans of action as determined by the group. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply for a first time leadership program being offered in October of 2013.
