Tyler, TX (KETK) — UPDATE: The man arrested following an apartment fire in Tyler allegedly set fire to the complex.
Tyler Police tell KETK, the incident happened just after 5:00 pm on Friday at an apartment complex on the 700 block of Kennedy in Tyler.
When authorities arrived, they found one apartment completely engulfed in flames and the entire area filled with thick black smoke.
The building was evacuated.
While the fire was being extinguished, police were alerted to a disturbance in the front of the building.
Several men were struggling with a man, identified as Cantrell Sash.
During the investigation, police say they learned Sash had deliberately set the fire in his own apartment. He was arrested for arson and booked into the Smith County Jail.
There were no injuries in the fire, but there was extensive damage to the building.
ORIGNAL STORY: The Tyler Fire Department has contained an apartment complex fire.
Crews arrived just after 5:00 p.m., on Friday at the apartments in the 700 block of Kennedy in Tyler.
The fire was contained at 5:28 p.m.
The fire started in an upstairs apartment, which received fire damage, but the extent of that damage is unknown at this time.
Nearby apartments received minor smoke damage and no injuries were reported.
One person has been arrested in connection with the fire.
