Tyler , TX (KETK) — Memorial Day Weekend is filled with good food, good friends and a day off of work and school.
And it is the official kickoff weekend to summer.
Lots of people are skipping town and a ton of people go camping.
"It's an opportunity to get away from the house and just relax," said Tyler State Park Superintendent Bill Smart.
Smart says every Memorial Day Weekend, all 184 campsites are booked and more than 700 campers will be roaming around the park.
"Tyler State Park is one of the more popular camping areas in East Texas mainly because of the recreation opportunities here,'' said Smart.
KETK caught up with some first time campers who love,
"Swimming and smores," said sisters Madilyn and Cheyenne Kincaid.
And others who are veterans to the park.
"We've been coming here for many years. Lots of cooking and eating," said Charrlotte Jones.
Also the true campers, who just brought their tents, their family and their bikes.
"We came with our big tent. We brought our little camping stove and we're ready to go. No motor home," said Victoria Boccoleri.
And the campers who came a couple days before to beat the memorial day crowd.
"Memorial day crowds you know, people come out and can get loud and rowdy and that kind of thing so we try to avoid that," said Russ Kincaid.
Smart says their will be about a thousand people total this weekend camping, swimming and enjoying the holiday weekend.
"We prepare for it mentally and physically and we're ready for just about everything."
