Cherokee County, TX (KETK) — A 2-year-old boy is dead after what authorities say was an accidental, self-inflicted gun-shot wound.
The child, Trenton Mathis, was to turn 3-years-old on July 5.
At 3:19 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call for medical assistance in the Shadybrook East Subdivision on Lake Palestine.
The caller was reporting that a 2-year-old child had shot himself in the face with a 9MM pistol.
The call for help was made by the child's great-grandmother, who was at home with the child when the shooting occurred, as was the child's great-grandfather.
The Lake Palestine Volunteer Fire Department , as well as EMS, arrived on scene in an attempt to treat the child.
ETMC Air-1 was called in to fly the child to a trauma center in Tyler where the child was later pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Further details are not available at this time due to an ongoing investigation as to what exactly happened and how the child came into
possession of the handgun.
No determination has been made as to whether any criminal charges will be filed.
Once the investigation is completed, the information will be forwarded to the District Attorney's office for review.
