Austin, TX (Longview News-Journal) — East Texas Rep. Travis Clardy was busy last week as a member of the Select Committee on Redistricting, a panel named by House Speaker Joe Straus to focus on the issue of political boundaries that prompted Gov. Rick Perry to call a session continuing today.
Much of the Republican leadership in Austin has expressed a preference to stick with court-drawn maps for state legislative districts and the U.S. Congress, but Clardy, a Nacogdoches Republican, said Friday the committee is keeping an open mind during hearings.
“I think the (Texas) House and Senate are taking the point of view that we want to welcome all points of view and see where that gets us,” Clardy said. “If there’s a sense or feeling the maps we ran under (in 2012) are inadequate or inappropriate, then we would address it.”
