Tyler TX (KETK) — With the weather getting hot outside, most of us are cranking up the air conditioning and turning on fans.
There are a lot of things you can do to prepare your home for the hot Texas summer.
"Keep the fans going and keep the windows and the blinds shut," said Tyler Resident Jennifer Hall.
Many people are probably wondering what they can do to keep their energy bills low.
"At nighttime turn everything off, use the fan instead of the air conditioner, open the windows so you can have a cross breeze going through the house," said Tyler resident Zach Wolf.
Experts say using fans and raising the temperature on your thermostat can cut costs by 14%.
"Anything you can do to keep the air moving will really make a difference in your comfort," said Oncor East Region Manager Charles Hill.
Hill also says when you're not home turn up your air conditioning by three or four degrees.
Doing this, can save you at least $180 a year.
"If your air conditioning is working efficiently in 30 or 40 minutes you'll be feeling pretty comfortable that's really the way to save more money," said Hill.
Hill also says you want to move your appliances like your refrigerator washer and dryer away from the wall to keep the circulation flowing.
"Don't stack things around it, keep the coils clean, all those things can really make your refrigerator more efficient."
And run your dish washer and washer and dryer later at night so it doesn't build up heat during the day.
"There are a lot of things that save you a little bit at a time but if you do all of them you can save 20 30 40% savings on your electric bill," said Hill.
