(NBC News) — A new Facebook initiative may help increase the number of organ donors in the United States.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University collaborated with Facebook to add organ donation to a user's profile.
When someone changed their status to "organ donor", they were given a link to register with their state.
They saw the number of new online organ donation registrations go up more than twenty fold.
Rates remained high for nearly two weeks.
Researchers plan to study whether this new Facebook status will have an impact on the nation's organ supply.
