If you are a gun enthusiast, times have been pretty tough lately.
Particularly if you were in the market for the guns that were the target of the assault weapon ban.
When congress was discussing a possible ban on so-called assault weapons, the gun market went crazy.
Everyone assumed there would be a shortage, or worse, an outright ban of the military-style semi-automatic rifles like the Ar15 and its various clones.
So, buyers snatched up every one in sight, and paid through the nose according to gun writer Nick Leghorn
“That left people with a giant wad of cash that they were able to throw at whatever they wanted, and the gun control push forced them to throw that giant wad of cash at buying guns,” Leghorn says.
Now that the threat of a ban is over, it appears that panic is starting to ebb, and you can find them again.
In fact, you can find one pretty cheap.
“Obviously part of that market of 2 or 3 months ago was driven by national news media and some of the catastrophic things that had happened during and slightly before that period of time,” says Mack Woods of The Shootist gun shop. “And yes, it’s calmed down quite a bit since then.”
Now, ammunition is still scarce and expensive, and small pistols as well.
But overall, the market is returning to some semblance of normal.
“People who bought their guns at those ridiculous prices are now seeing their credit cards coming due,” Leghorn says. “And they don’t like the zeros on the end of their bill. And they are looking to sell off those AR15’s that they bought, and they’re doing it at below market prices. So what we’re seeing here is the bottom actually dropping out of the market for Ar15’s.”
