Tyler, Texas (KETK) — A phone scam is currently targeting East Texans. Phone calls from people claiming to be "tech support" for the popular computer company Microsoft; that's what Carol Mckinney of Whitehouse has been dealing with. McKinney says, “They said they were from Microsoft and that they had gotten information from my computer, signals from my computer that there were problems and errors and they wanted to fix it for me."
Mckinney thought these calls to fix her computer via. telephone were a little odd."I thought that was strange because my computer is broke, i haven't been on it in over two or three years," Mckinney says.
She was tired of getting these calls, so she says she scared them off, "I just told him that my neighbor was a policeman and wanted to talk to him and he hung up and has not called back," McKinney says.
She isn't the only one getting these calls. More than 70 comments were posted on our KETK NBC Facebook page—all from East Texans claiming they too have received the same calls.
‘Kim N' Kevin Passons’says: “Four or five calls last week."
Janice Stillwell comments: “I've had numerous calls. I told them I would contact Microsoft myself to address the problems.”
Mechele Mills, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central and East Texas says, "They target different states and just kind of move through the country and different area codes and right now they just happen to be in our area."
Mills says these scam calls from bogus companies come in waves, and there isn't much you can do to stop them, She says, "Really the only way to not answer the phone at all or just keep hanging up on these people.”
If you do receive these calls please contact the BBB at 3600 Old Bullard Rd Tyler, TX 75701
