(KETK) - Tyler Tx — It's summertime!
The sun is shining, the grills are sizzling, and the last thing you need... is to be stuck inside sick.
The viruses that cause a summer cold are different than the ones that cause your winter colds... and summer colds can be worse.
Winter colds are more in the head... you typically just get a fever, sore throat and runny nose.
But summer colds have a more serious tone and they can come with symptoms beyond the norm.
"In adults we do see that some of the summer viruses can have gastrointestinal symptoms as well such as diarrhea, upset stomach, and even vomiting," said Dr. Andrea Ellis.
They can also be caught in a variety of ways.
Traveling is one hot spot for viruses. From airports to public bathrooms.... you're touching the same surfaces as hundreds before you.
"When you're on trips you're coming across different surfaces and restaurants," said Dr. Paul McGaha. "A lot of people have been in the restrooms there, so we like the A-B-C rule. Wash your hands as long as it takes you to say the alphabet."
So how do you avoid this summertime illness?
"I think the primary way you can avoid a cold is to keep your immune system up as best you can," Dr. Ellis said.
Get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly... and constantly wash your hands.
And if you already have a cold? how to you make it go away?
"We don't have a cure for the cold but your body does know what to do," Dr. Ellis said. "So I think the best thing you can do is to just live healthy.
